Answer/Comments:

We very strongly support the government's proposals regarding the (statutory) content of the science curriculum. Good quality Sex and Relationships Education (SRE), appropriate to the age of the learners, is an essential part of the curriculum in all Catholic schools, but we urge the government to resist calls for SRE to be included within the science curriculum. SRE is about much more than simple biology and 'smuggling' it into science will do nothing to improve the quality of teaching in this important subject. Most serious of all, however, is that it would curtail parents' rights in the matter of withdrawl. The ability to make decisions about their children's education in SRE is a fundamental and natural right of parents which must be safeguarded.
