Answer/Comments:

We very strongly support the
government's proposals regarding the (statutory) content of the science
curriculum. Good quality Sex and Relationships Education (SRE), appropriate
to the age of the learners, is an essential part of the curriculum in all
Catholic schools, but we urge the government to resist calls for SRE to be
included within the science curriculum. SRE is about much more than simple
biology and 'smuggling' it into science will do nothing to improve the
quality of teaching in this important subject. Most serious of all,
however, is that it would curtail parents' rights in the matter of withdrawl. The ability to make decisions about their
children's education in SRE is a fundamental and natural right of parents
which must be safeguarded.
